The battle took place on the ypres salient on the western front in belgium outside the city of ypres now known by its flemish name ieper.

Battle of ypres veterans. During world war i the second battle of ypres was fought from 22 april 25 may 1915 for control of the strategic flemish town of ypres in western belgium. In the first week of april 1915 the canadian troops were moved from their quiet sector to a bulge in the allied line in front of the city of ypres. A critical victory for the allies the first battle of ypres saw the bef sustain 7 960 killed 29 562 wounded and 17 873 missing while the french incurred between 50 000 and 85 000 casualties of all types. Both sides suffered significant losses during an offensive which has helped shape popular memory of the conflict.

It was a region largely made up of flat low ground that was kept dry only with the help of an intricate series of dikes and ditches. The third battle of ypres known as passchendaele was one of the bloodiest battles fought on the western front.

The second battle of ypres took place in the province of west flanders belgium and the casualties were many the destruction severe. The first battle of ypres had been fought the previous autumn. In the seventeen days of battle heavy artillery uprooted the soil causing poppies lying dormant in the field to bloom in great numbers across the war torn meadows. Ypres gave its name to three major battles.

Three years of heavy fighting there however had entirely destroyed these drainage systems. The second battle of ypres was fought during the first world war from 22 april to 25 may 1915.
